
Superintendent, Stockbridge Management Unit
Introduction
The Superintendent of the Stockbridge Management Unit manages stewardship operations, facilities, and capital projects on 9 properties totaling almost 3,000 acres. These include formal garden landscapes, forests, hilltops, fields, and other natural landscapes as well as significant historic and ecological resources including two National Historic Landmark houses and a National Natural Landmark. The properties also include multiple and varied enterprises.
The Superintendent reports to the Operations Manager for the Western Region.
Responsibilities
Property Stewardship:
- Manage the Management Unit’s properties (including their ecological, cultural, and historic resources) following The Trustees’ Management Guidelines.
- Maintain each property’s visitor services infrastructure to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable, exceptional, and safe experience at The Trustees’ properties.
- Oversee routine maintenance of all structures as well as oversee larger capital projects undertaken by staff and by contractors.
- Ensure proper maintenance of all vehicles and equipment, and a safe working environment.
- Oversee development of annual operating budgets for the Management Unit for submission to the Operations Manager and Regional Director.
- Represent The Trustees before local and state committees and regulatory boards and hearings, as necessary.
Organizational Capacity Building:
- Work with regional engagement staff to identify our most effective outreach and engagement opportunities for the Management Unit and support the development and implementation of these efforts.
- Recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers to support the work of the Management Unit and The Trustees, broadly.
- Develop and maintain volunteer property committees that support our efforts at properties and broadly further the mission of The Trustees.
- Represent The Trustees within the community and work effectively with key supporters and community leaders. Make presentations to public and private organizations concerning the mission and activities of The Trustees.
- Participate in identifying and pursuing funding opportunities to support local and organizational priorities, as needed.
Personnel:
- Supervise and provide leadership for full-time and seasonal employees as well as volunteers.
- Develop annual work plans for employees and key volunteers and conduct annual performance reviews.
Experience, Education, and Skills
- Have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Park Management, Forestry or another natural resource field and at least 8 years experience in these areas or related fields.
- Have at least 3 years of experience in a supervisory role.
- Enjoy working with a diversity of people, have excellent people skills, and be comfortable and competent working with committees, volunteers, and speaking to the public.
- Be able to work independently and unsupervised.
- Proven success in management of capital projects.
- Have horticulture and formal landscape management experience and/or experience in managing cultural/historic landscapes.
- Have expertise maintaining structures and their systems.
- Have significant experience using a chainsaw, snowplow, tractor, and other equipment.
- Be able to handle the physical demands of the job.
- Have sound computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Hours, Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position, based in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The work schedule requires some flexibility in terms of evening and weekend commitments. Travel within the Management Unit and to other Trustees offices is required. The position provides a competitive salary and benefits package.
